Mistakes to Avoid While Entering Choices in JEE Counselling 2026

Even small mistakes while entering choices in JEE Counselling 2026 can reduce your chances of securing admission into the desired institutes. Some of the common mistakes are filling in limited choices, ignoring closing ranks, forgetting to lock choices, and other errors. We have explained below the list of mistakes to avoid while entering choices in JEE Counselling 2026:

Filling Limited Choices

This is one of the biggest mistakes made by the JEE aspirants. Many students fill choices for only a limited number of colleges/courses during JEE choice filling. This may reduce their chances of securing admission to good colleges. They can fill as many choices as they wish to because there are no restrictions on the number of institutes that one can add during the choice filling.

Ignoring Closing Ranks

This error can reduce your chances of securing admission to better institutes. Most students select institutes based on random guesswork. They skip reviewing the previous year’s closing ranks. But the closing rank helps you understand the last rank at which admission is usually provided. It helps you identify the list of colleges you can aim for and which colleges can be risky or safe. Avoiding closing ranks will result in unrealistic preferences and missing achievable institutes.

Selecting Institutes Based on One Course

Many times, it happens that candidates select colleges based on a popular program and fill in choices related to that only. Hence, it is recommended to choose branches that are similar or close to your preferred options to improve your chances of seat allotment.

Incorrect Assumptions Using the Seat Matrix

Many students make the mistake of predicting seat allotment only by looking at the seat matrix. This is not accurate because seat allotment is based not only on the availability of seats but also on the number of applicants and their ranks.

Forgetting to Save their Choices

In many cases, aspirants edit their options in choice-filling but fail to save their modifications. Students must remember that only the saved choices are considered by the system. It is mandatory to save all the changes made during the choice-filling and retain the printed copy for future reference.

Forgetting to Lock their Choices

Many times, students forget lock their choices during JoSAA counselling 2026. Aspirants should“lock” their choices on/before the last day of choice filling. If they fail to lock their choices, the last saved choices will be locked automatically after the deadline. Once locked, the choices filled by the applicant cannot be edited. If aspirants wish to edit their choices after locking but before the choice-filling deadline, they can do so by first submitting a request to unlock in the online JoSAA portal. An OTP will be sent to the registered mobile and email, which can be used to validate the unlock request. Once validated, the aspirant’s choices will be unlocked for editing. Aspirants will not be able to edit their choice list after the deadline for choice filling. It means candidates cannot change the order of their choices or add any more program(s) or delete any program(s) from their choice list after the deadline.

Delaying until the last day

This is one of the biggest mistakes made while entering choices in JEE Counselling 2026. Many candidates delay their choice filling and wait for the last day. This can create errors like server problems, slow internet, stress and wrong choice filling. If you hurry, you are more likely to make mistakes. Early choice filling will help you get more time to research and edit choices. This will also prevent technical glitches. Therefore, you should not delay until the last day of choice filling
