Seat Allotment is an important part of the JEE Counselling 2026. Candidates must register on the JoSAA portal and fill in their choices for seat allocation. They should lock their choices on or before the last day of choice filling. All the registered candidates should log in to the JoSAA portal and check if a seat is allocated in a given round of seat allocation. No separate intimation of seat allocation will be provided to the applicants. If they are allocated a seat, they need to complete all steps of “Online Reporting” specified by the authorities. This include accept the seat, uploading the documents, paying the seat acceptance fees and responding to queries. Failing to complete all the steps of online reporting for seat acceptance within the deadline will be considered as rejection of the offer, and candidates will not be able to participate in the seat allocation process in the next rounds, if any. Read on to understand the seat allotment explained below and learn how JEE counselling really works.

What is Seat Allotment in JEE Counselling?

The seat allotment is the process through which eligible aspirants are allocated a seat in IITs, NITs, IIEST, IIITs, and other GFTIs based on their JEE Main/JEE Advanced rank, availability of seats and choice filled. An aspirant who has been allocated a seat should download the “Initial Seat Allotment Intimation Slip”, which has details about the Seat Allotment and steps to be followed for seat confirmation by the aspirants. They need to accept the seat allocated and select any one of the options ‘Freeze’, ‘Slide’ or ‘Float’ (see Section XX) for the choice of academic course for the next round(s), if any, of joint seat allocation. Seat will be confirmed by IITs / NIT+ System Institutes only after the uploaded documents are successfully verified, and ensuring that the aspirants fulfil all the eligibility criteria. Below, we have explained the complete seat allotment process and how JEE counselling really works.

Seat Allotment Explained: How JEE Counselling Really Works

Candidates will be required to log in to the JoSAA portal for registration and filling in the choices of academic programs in various Institutes. After logging in, they must proceed to the next steps, such as registration, choice filling, choice locking, etc. Aspirants will be eligible for seat allocation based on one, two, three or all four exams, viz., JEE (Advanced), JEE (Main) B.E. / B. Tech. Paper, JEE (Main) B.Arch. Paper, and JEE (Main) B.Plan. Paper. Even for applicants who are eligible to appear in the Joint Seat Allocation based on any two, any three or all four of the given exams, only ONE seat from among the choices filled in is made available. Thus, it is crucial for aspirants to carefully prioritise the academic course while filling in the choices, while keeping in mind that only the choices filled in will be made available for seat allocation.

Two mock seat allocations will also be provided in the counselling process. Each aspirant must fill in the choices carefully. They must select only those academic courses in the choices which the they are willing to join and prioritise them in order of preference of program/institute. Candidates must make the most of the mock seat allocations and select all academic programs that they are willing to join in the order of preference. Candidates must “lock” their choices on/before the last day of choice filling. If they do not lock their choices, the last saved choices will be locked automatically upon reaching the last date for choice filling. Once locked, the choices filled by an aspirant cannot be edited.

Seat Allotment in JEE Counselling Explained

The seat allotment in JEE counselling involves various steps. Candidates need to accept the Seat (‘Freeze’, ‘Slide’ or ‘Float’), upload the documents, pay the Seat Acceptance Fee, and respond to queries (if any) to proceed ahead in the JoSAA counselling. We have explained every step of the seat allotment in JEE counselling for reference purposes:

Accept the Seat

At the time of accepting the seat online, the aspirant has to select any one of the options, i.e. ‘Freeze’, ‘Float’ or ‘Slide’ for the choice of academic course for the next stage(s), if any, of joint seat allocation. Accepting the allocated seat by selecting any one of these options is compulsory to continue in the JoSAA process. If the applicant has been allocated a seat as per their first choice, they will not be provided with any of the options other than Freeze. In such a case, the candidate may either accept and freeze the offered seat or reject the offered seat. If the candidate has been allocated a seat which is not their first choice and they want to be considered for a higher choice in their list of choices, in the next rounds, they must accept the allotted seat by choosing one of the available options (i.e. Float or Slide), to continue in the next stage (if any) of the JoSAA process.

  1. Freeze: Selecting the option “Freeze” means that the aspirant accepts the offered seat and indicates that they are content with the allotted academic program and that they don’t want to appear in further rounds of seat allocation while retaining the same seat. Such candidates will not be considered in the next stage of JoSAA (if any).
  2. Float: Selecting the option “Float” means that the candidate accepts the offered seat and indicates that, if admission to an academic course of higher preference in any Institute is offered in further rounds of seat allocation, they will accept it. Otherwise, they will continue with the currently accepted academic course. Such candidates will be considered in further stages of JoSAA counselling (if any).
  3. Slide: Selecting the option “Slide” means that the candidate accepts the offered seat and indicates that, if admission to an academic course of higher preference is offered within the same Institute in the next stages of seat allotment, they will accept it. Such aspirants will be considered in further rounds of JEE counselling.

Upload the documents

The candidate should upload all the required documents on the JoSAA portal if the required documents have not already been uploaded during JoSAA registration. The list of documents required during JEE Counselling online reporting for admission to NIT+ System/ IITs is as follows:

  • Class X Mark Sheet/Certificate or Aadhaar Card or Birth Certificate (for Date of Birth)
  • Class XII Mark Sheet and Certificate (Qualifying Examination)
  • Admit card of JEE (Main)
  • Certificate of category (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/GEN-EWS), if applicable
  • Original Certificate for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwD), if applicable, issued by the competent authority
  • Original Certificate for persons having less than 40% disability and having difficulty in writing, if applicable
  • Crossed Bank Cheque copy / Image of Passbook with bank account details
  • Medical Certificate
  • OCI certificate/ PIO card, if applicable
  • Passport/Citizenship certificate, if applicable

Pay the Seat Acceptance Fee

The candidate should pay the seat acceptance fee to participate in the further JoSAA process till the end to secure a seat in IITs or NIT+ System. The uploaded documents will not be verified unless the candidate pays the seat acceptance fee. Admission fee differs across the Institutes/categories and is different from the seat acceptance fee. Applicants need to pay the seat acceptance fee only in the round in which the seat is allotted for the first time or through the pre-payment option. Failing to pay the seat acceptance fee is one of the ways to reject the offered/allocated seat and will be considered as a rejection of the allotted seat. They can pay the seat acceptance fee using a debit card/UPI/Credit card/Net Banking/E-Challan/CSC. Below is the category-wise seat acceptance fees for reference purposes:

CategorySeat Acceptance Fees
SC, ST, GEN-PwD, GEN-EWS-PwD, OBC-NCL-PwD, SC-PwD or ST-PwDRs. 15,000
Other CategoryRs 30,000

Note: The seat acceptance fee will be adjusted against the admission fee, excluding JoSAA processing charges of Rs. 5000.

Respond to queries (if any)

At the time of document verification, if the DV officer raises any query, the applicant must respond in online mode through the candidate portal within the deadline. Failing to respond to the queries on time will lead to cancellation of the allotted seat, and the candidate will not be able to appear in the further rounds of JEE counselling, if any. They should check the online portal regularly and respond to queries (if any) without fail within the deadline. No separate intimation will be provided to the aspirants.

Candidates should complete all the above steps before their details are submitted to the reporting authorities for verification and provisional allocation of the seat. Document verification is done only for those aspirants who have successfully paid the seat acceptance fee.
