Candidates should be familiar with the seat cancellation and fee refund rules in JEE Counselling 2026. This helps them avoid last-minute surprises or confusion. If the candidate is allocated a seat, they should complete all the steps of the “Online Reporting” in order to accept the allocated seat before the last date. Failing to do so within the deadline of the same round of JoSAA will lead to cancellation of the allocated seat, and they will not be able to participate in the next JoSAA rounds, if any. Seat acceptance fee is not refundable. But if an applicant later withdraws from the seat allocation process, then the seat acceptance fee paid will be refunded after deducting the JoSAA withdrawal processing charges of Rs. 7000. What are the Seat Cancellation Rules in JEE Counselling?
Candidates should log in to the JoSAA portal to check if a seat is allotted in a given round of seat allocation. No separate intimation of JEE seat allotment will be provided to the candidate. We have shared below the seat cancellation rules in JEE counselling for reference purposes:
- Failing to complete all the steps of “Online Reporting” within the deadline will lead to cancellation of the allotted seat.
- Non-payment of the seat acceptance fee is also one of way to reject the offered/allocated seat and will be considered as a rejection of the allocated seat.
- Seat will be confirmed by IITs / NIT+ System Institutes only after the uploaded documents are verified, and the candidate meets all the eligibility criteria. In case of any discrepancies in the uploaded documents during the online verification process, query(ies) may be raised and will be notified to the aspirant. Failing to successfully reply to the query(s) raised would lead to seat cancellation. It will also be considered as a rejection of the offer, and the candidate would have forfeited the eligibility for admission to any of the institutes through JoSAA.
- Seat can be cancelled if, at any time, any of the documents/certificates are found to be invalid/fraudulent and/or the candidate fails to meet any of the eligibility criteria.
What are the Fee Refund Rules in JEE Counselling 2026?
Many students want to know whether the fee will be refunded if they do not get a seat or decide to withdraw from the JEE counselling process. The seat acceptance fees is Rs. 15,000 for candidates belonging to SC, ST, GEN-PwD, GEN-EWS-PwD, OBC-NCL-PwD, SC-PwD or ST-PwD. The seat acceptance fee is Rs. 30,000 for all other candidates (the fee includes Rs. 5,000 JoSAA processing charges). The seat acceptance fee will be adjusted against the admission fee, excluding JoSAA processing charges of Rs. 5000. Here are a few fee refund rules in JEE Counselling 2026:
- There will also be a facility to make a prepayment of the “JoSAA seat acceptance fee”. The pre-payment fee will be refunded in full if the candidate is not allotted a seat. The pre-payment provision is optional for the candidates.
- Seat acceptance fee is not refundable. But if an aspirant withdraws from the seat allocation process, then the seat acceptance fee paid will be refunded after deducting the JoSAA withdrawal processing charges of Rs. 7000. If a aspirants’s seat is cancelled due to not fulfilling the eligibility criteria or unresolved discrepancy(ies) in the uploaded document(s), then the seat acceptance fee paid will be refunded after deducting the JoSAA processing charges of Rs. 5000.
- If a candidate withdraws seat, their allotted seat will be cancelled and offered to another candidate in a subsequent round of counselling. Seat acceptance fee will be refunded after deducting the withdrawal processing charges of Rs. 7000. Thus, the applicant will forfeit the eligibility for admissions to any of the institutes through JoSAA.
- If a candidate does not pay the Partial Admission Fee (PAF), they will forfeit the provisionally allotted seat. The vacant seat thus created will be made available to the aspirants in the CSAB Special rounds. In such cases, the Seat Acceptance Fee paid shall be refunded to these candidates after deducting a withdrawal processing charge of Rs. 7000.
