Here are detailed steps on how to fill choices for JEE Counselling smartly:

Understand How the Counselling System Works

Thinking how to fill choices for JEE Counselling 2026? You must understand how JEE counselling works before filling in choices. It is mandatory for the aspirants to register through the official JoSAA online portal to secure seats to be allocated through JoSAA in any of the IITs, NITs, IIEST, IIITs (Triple-I-Ts) and Other-GFTIs. The seat allotment depends on factors like your rank, category, seat availability, and preference order. The system checks your choices and tries to assign the best available option according to your rank.

Decide Your Priority- Branch or College?

The next strategy for how to fill choices for JEE counselling is deciding your priority. Students are often confused between college and a branch. But they need to decide their priority wisely. If they prefer coding and software jobs, then Computer Science or IT in a decent NIT or IIIT can be an ideal option. On the contrary, if they are more interested in brand value, alumni network, and exposure, then a top college with a slightly lower branch might be better.

Analyse Previous Year Cutoffs Carefully

You should never fill choices randomly. You must know all the aspects of how to fill choices for JEE counselling. Review the previous year’s opening and closing ranks. This provides a clear picture of where your rank actually stands. A strategic approach is to divide your preference list into three categories:

  • Dream choices: Institutes slightly above your rank.
  • Realistic choices: Institutes that accept admission around your rank.
  • Safe choices: Institutes that accept admission below your rank.

Fill Maximum Possible Choices

One of the biggest blunders students make is filling in limited options. Students often regret this decision when cutoff fluctuations happen. There is no penalty for adding more choices. Adding more preferences reduces the risk. Even if you are sure about one branch, keep alternatives as a backup. The competition is unpredictable, and cutoffs can move. So, be prepared for both the worst and the best situations.

Understand Freeze, Float, and Slide Options

This is one of the important strategy of how to fill choices for JEE Counselling. Aspirants need to accept the seat allocated and select any one of the options ‘Freeze’, ‘Slide’ or ‘Float’ for the choice of academic course for the next round(s), if any, of joint seat allocation. Check the meaning of these three terms below. It helps you understand how to fill choices for JEE counselling 2026.

  • Freeze: Aspirants accept the offered seat and are content with it, indicating they do not want to participate in the next rounds while retaining the same seat. Such candidates are not considered in further stages.
  • Float: Students accept the offered seat but indicate that if admission to an academic course of higher preference in their choice list is offered in the next rounds, they will accept that higher choice. They will be considered for allocation in any academic course higher up in their preference list across any institute.
  • Slide: Students accept the offered seat but indicate that if admission to an academic course of higher preference within the same institute is offered in the next rounds, they will accept that higher choice.

Lock the Choice

Candidates must “lock” their choices within the given deadline. If they do not lock their choices, the last saved choices will be locked automatically upon reaching the last date for choice filling. Once locked, the choices filled cannot be edited. If candidates wish to edit their choices after locking but before the choice-filling deadline, they can do so by submitting a request to unlock in the online JoSAA portal.

An OTP will be sent to their registered mobile and email. It can be used to validate the unlock request. Once validated, the candidate’s choices will be unlocked for editing.  Candidates will not be able to edit their choice list after the deadline for choice filling. It means that they cannot change the order of their choices or add any more program(s) or delete any course(s) from their choice list after the deadline is over.

Knowing how to fill choices for JEE counselling can help you avoid last-minute confusion. Choice filling in JEE Counselling is not a formality. It is a strategic approach.
