1. When does counselling start for JEE Mains?

Answer. The JEE Main counselling typically starts in the month of June. Candidates should visit the official JoSAA website, i.e. https://josaa.nic.in/, for complete information.

2. What is JoSAA 2026? 

Answer: The JoSAA full form is Joint Seat Allocation Authority. It is responsible for the joint seat allocation process for academic courses provided by the IITs, NITs, IIEST, IIITs, and other GFTIs. JoSAA comprises representatives from the Joint Admission Board (JAB) and the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB).

3. Who is eligible to participate in JoSAA counselling 2026? 

Answer: A candidate who fulfils one or more of the following criteria can appear in the joint seat allocation: 

a. Candidates qualified in JEE (Advanced) 2026 for IITs. 

b. Candidates with a rank in JEE (Main) 2026 for the NIT+ system. 

c. Must satisfy Class XII or equivalent performance criteria.

4. Which institutes participate in JEE Counselling 2026?

 Answer: The participating institutes are the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs or Triple-ITs), Schools of Planning and Architecture, and a few other technical institutes funded fully or partially by Central or State governments.

5. What examinations are the basis for admission through JoSAA 2026? 

Answer: Admission to IITs is based on the JEE (Advanced) 2026. Admission to NITs, IIEST, IIITs, and Other-GFTIs (referred to as the NIT+ system) depends on the JEE (Main) B.E. / B. Tech. Paper, JEE (Main) B.Arch. / B. Plan. Paper. Qualifying in these examinations does not ensure admission. You must fulfil other eligibility requirements of the institute/program and the required rank.

6. Is registration on the JoSAA online portal mandatory to get a seat?

Answer: Yes, it is compulsory to register through the official JoSAA online portal to secure seats allocated through JoSAA in any of the participating institutes.

7. I qualified in JEE (Advanced) 2026, and I am aiming for admission to one of the IITs. Do I need to register on the JoSAA portal? 

Answer: Yes. It is compulsory to register through the official JoSAA online portal to be able to secure seats to be allotted through JoSAA in any of the IITs, NITs, IIEST, IIITs (Triple-I-Ts) and Other-GFTIs. 

8. Can a foreign candidate participate in JEE Counselling 2026?

10. What is the role of mock seat allocation in JEE Counselling? 

Answer: There are typically two mock seat allocations. It may help aspirants to assess likely allotments based on the current preferences of registered aspirants

11. The choice filling deadline is already over. Am I permitted to make any changes in my choice list after the last date? 

Answer: No. You will not be permitted to edit your choice list after the deadline for choice filling. It means you cannot modify the order of your choices, or add any more programs to or delete any course from the choice list after the deadline is over.

12. What happens if multiple candidates have the same rank? 

Answer: If there are fewer seats available under a category in a course than the number of candidates with the same category-wise rank seeking admission, all those aspirants will be provided seats by creating the requisite number of additional seats.

13. How do I accept a seat provisionally allotted in JEE Counselling? 

Answer: A candidate who has been allotted a seat must first download the “Initial Seat Allotment Intimation Slip” and complete all the steps for seat confirmation.

Step 1: Select any one of the options: ‘freeze’, ‘float’, or ‘slide’.

Step 2: Upload the documents (if not done already through document pre-upload).

Step 3: Pay the seat acceptance fee (if not paid already through the pre-payment option.

14. What is the Seat Acceptance Fee in JEE Counselling? 

Answer: The Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF) is paid to secure the seat that has been provisionally allotted to an aspirant during a round of JEE Counselling. If you fail to pay this fee within the deadlines, the allotted seat will be cancelled, and you will not be able to appear in the next rounds, if any. The seat acceptance fee is Rs. 15,000  for candidates with the category tag SC, ST, GEN-PwD, GEN-EWS-PwD, OBC-NCL-PwD, SC-PwD, or ST-PwD, SAF and Rs. 30,000 for all other candidates (the SAF includes Rs. 5,000 as JoSAA processing charges).

15. What are the options after being provisionally allocated a seat in JEE Counselling? Answer: After a seat is allocated in a round, the aspirant must finish all steps of “Online Reporting” to accept it. These steps include accepting the seat and selecting one of the options: ‘Freeze’, ‘Slide’, or ‘Float’. Accepting the allotted seat by selecting one of these options is compulsory to continue in the JoSAA process. If the allotted seat is the candidate’s first choice, only the ‘Freeze’ option is available (or reject the seat). If it’s not the first choice and the aspirant wants to be considered for higher choices, they must select ‘Float’ or ‘Slide’.

16.  What do ‘Freeze’, ‘Float’, and ‘Slide’ options mean in JEE Counselling? 

Answer: a. Freeze: Aspirants accept the offered seat and are content with it, indicating they do not want to appear in the next rounds while retaining the same seat. Such candidates are not considered in further rounds. 

b. Float: Aspirants accept the offered seat but indicate that if admission to an academic course of higher preference in their choice list is provided in further rounds, they will accept that higher choice. They will be considered for allocation in any academic course higher up in their preference list across any institute. 

c. Slide: Aspirants accept the offered seat but indicate that if admission to an academic course of higher preference within the same institute is provided in the next rounds, they will accept that higher choice.

17.  Can I change my chosen option (Freeze/Float/Slide) in JEE Counselling? 

Answer: An aspirant can change from Float to Slide/Freeze and Slide to Freeze in the online portal during all rounds of Seat Allocation except the last round. Once they opt for ‘Freeze’, the option cannot be modified in further rounds under any circumstances. 

18. I belong to a reserved category and have been allotted a seat under the same category. I completed online document verification and opted for “freeze” willingness. In the next round, I observed that my seat allocated category has been updated to OPEN. Do I need to worry about my birth category? 

Answer: There is no change in the institute/academic course allotted to you. Only the seat allocated category is updated to OPEN. However, the aspirant’s birth category remains unaltered.

19. What is Online Reporting in JEE Counselling? 

Answer: Online Reporting involves completing various steps after a seat is allotted in a round. These steps include accepting the seat and opting for Freeze/Float/Slide, uploading necessary documents, paying the seat acceptance fee, and responding to any queries raised by the verifying officers within the deadline.

20. What happens if I fail to finish the Online Reporting steps in JEE Counselling? Answer: Failing to finish all the steps of “Online Reporting” within the deadline of the round in which the seat is allocated will lead to the cancellation of the allocated seat, and the aspirants will not be able to appear in the next JoSAA rounds. 

21. What documents are required for online reporting/registration?

 Answer: The list of documents includes Proof of Date of Birth (Birth Certificate or Class X Certificate or Aadhaar Card), Class XII Marksheet (or equivalent), Certificate of category, if applicable, State of Eligibility Proof, OCI certificate/ PIO card if applicable, Passport/Citizenship certificate if applicable, Medical Certificate, Original Certificate for persons having less than 40% disability and having difficulty in writing if applicable, UDID if applicable.

22. I was allocated and confirmed a seat in a certain round in an IIT. I have now been allocated another seat of higher preference in my choice list in another IIT. Do I need to report again online? 

Answer: No, if you have already finished all the steps of online reporting process in a certain round in an IIT reporting centre and you have been allotted another seat of higher preference in your choice list in another IIT, you don’t have to repeat the online reporting process.

23. What is the state code of eligibility? 

Answer: State code of eligibility (applicable to NIT+ system) implies the code of the state from where the aspirant has first appeared the Class XII (or equivalent) exam.

24. Can I withdraw from the seat allocation process after accepting a seat? 

Answer: Yes, applicants who have accepted/allotted a seat can withdraw from the process starting from the 2nd round up to the 5th round for IITs. For the NIT+ system, withdrawal is possible up to Round 6. The withdrawal process includes logging into the portal, submitting a request with a signed declaration form, confirming with OTP, and verification by a reporting officer. If the withdrawal request is accepted, the allotted seat is cancelled, and the candidate will not be considered for the next rounds. If the request is rejected, the candidate can resubmit before the deadline.

25. Can I exit the seat allocation process if I have not been allotted a seat? 

Answer: Yes, an aspirant who has not been allotted a seat can exit the process. This also includes steps like logging into the portal, submitting a request, and confirming with OTP. After exiting, aspirants will not be permitted to appear in further JoSAA rounds.

26.  How many rounds of seat allocation are there in JEE Counselling? 

Answer: There are a total of six rounds of seat allocation in JEE Counselling. This will be followed by the CSAB Special round for the NIT+ system.

27. Will there be any spot round of seat allocation at any of the IITs after the completion of the 6th round of seat allocation? 

Answer: No. There will be no spot round of seat allocation at any of the IITs after the 6th round (final round) of seat allocation is over.

28. Can I simultaneously get one seat in IIT and another seat in the NIT+ system through JoSAA? 

Answer: No. In each JoSAA round, an aspirant is allotted “only one” seat based on the rank and preference order filled in during the choice filling stage.

29. What is the Partial Admission Fee (PAF) in JEE Counselling 2026? 

Answer: At the end of the 6th round of JoSAA, candidates having a provisionally allocated seat in the NIT+ System are required to pay the Partial Admission Fee (PAF) along with the Seat Acceptance Fee from their JoSAA portal.

30. Do I need to pay PAF? 

Answer: Yes, you need to pay PAF if you are allotted a seat in the NIT+ system. Failing to pay the partial admission fee will be considered as a rejection of the offered/allocated seat.
